Yes, we have started picking our corn!!! It is one of the earliest seasons on record for our farm.
While this summer heat makes for some very uncomfortable working conditions for our team, the corn loves it. We started harvesting on Saturday the 13th, and the crop looks to be really strong.
We plant over 14 varieties of corn throughout the spring and into the summer. Each variety performs differently depending on the growing conditions. The varieties have slight differences in ear size, kernel size, and flavor profile.
Our ultimate goal is to have no harvesting gaps throughout the harvest season. The corn we are picking now doesn't have that "super sweet" sugar content that the later season varieties have, but it performs well in the cold start of April, has a decently sized ear, and still provides sweetness and the flavor that only fresh corn can provide. The best thing about our corn season is that the corn only gets better as the season progresses.
Another summer staple that we have started harvesting is beans. We have a good crop of both yellow and green beans going forward, and their flavor is exceptional.
Our field tomatoes have some nice fruit set on them and are progressing well. John estimates it will be about ten days before they make their way into our farm market.
It's sure an exciting time of year as something new seems to make its way from our fields into our farm market each day. The day before I wrote this, it was peppers: shishito, jalapeno, cubanelle, and green bell peppers. Today, it was eggplant. Tomorrow? Well, visit our "Now Harvesting" page to see the latest list!
We're also getting beautiful flowers from our fields, including sunflowers. We've got fresh bouquets waiting for you, or you can gather your own from our "pick your own" cutting garden.
Visit us soon to enjoy all the colors and flavors of summer!
