Kyle's Farm Update: It's looking like fall

The last few days of summer are here and we have begun to notice the chill in the morning air. The aroma of apple pies and fresh baked goods comes from our farm bakery as we turn on the farm trucks in the early mornings.

Heading into the fields we notice the early leaves changing color and already starting to fall on the ground in places. But the true feel of fall really hits home when we pull into a five acre field loaded with jack-o-lantern pumpkins, gourds, and specialty pumpkins. A few more sips of coffee (not pumpkin spice for me!) and it’s time to start “playing catch” as we load them all into our trucks and trailers and head back to our farm market

Most of our crops are in good shape at this point and we should have a nice fall crop of beets, carrots, and fresh greens. We are hoping that we will have a bountiful supply of fall storage crops including potatoes, sweet potatoes, leeks, and winter squash. Our crew just finished harvesting 12 large bins of winter squash this past week. We are chugging along and hoping to get it all harvested in a timely manner as we keep an eye on falling temperatures.

If you want to do some picking at the farm, our “pick your own pumpkin patch” is now open. I walked it yesterday with my daughter and we found jack-o-lanterns, pie pumpkins, white pumpkins, and even a bunch of munchkins. This year it’s located right next our garden center so carrying the biggest pumpkins you can find back to your car should be no problem at all!

Fall is a bit different this year due to COVID, but there’s still a lot of fun and great food at the farm. Come visit and enjoy the season!
